A new prototype of the Hyundai Tucson was recently seen in South Korea, revealing significant changes from the current model. The upcoming Tucson looks notably bigger, approaching the size of a previous Kia Sorento, and features a fresh interior design highlighted by a huge infotainment screen.
Tucson’s Increased Size Suggests More Interior Space
The new Tucson appears longer and roomier compared to today’s model, which measures about 4.5 metres (177 inches). Parked next to an older Kia Sorento measuring around 4.8 metres (187 inches), the Tucson prototype seems nearly as large. Though camouflage may exaggerate its dimensions, the clear extension of the body hints at a longer wheelbase and more passenger and cargo space.
This growth in size follows a trend of SUVs expanding to offer better comfort and more features. The extra room could place the Tucson closer in size to midsize SUVs, giving it an edge in interior flexibility.
New Interior Showcases Hyundai’s Latest Infotainment System
Unlike its camouflaged exterior, the Tucson’s cabin was mostly visible in the spy sighting. The centerpiece is Hyundai’s new Pleos infotainment setup, a tablet-style touchscreen that looks even larger than the 14.6-inch unit offered in the new Elantra. It may approach the Grandeur’s 17-inch display size, providing a more modern and connected experience.
The dashboard retains a separate digital instrument cluster above the steering wheel, similar to recent Hyundai sedan models. Interestingly, the prototype uses a traditional gear lever instead of buttons or stalks seen in current Tucson versions. This older-style shifter might indicate a lower trim or regional variation rather than the final design.
Other visible features in the interior include dual wireless phone chargers, large cup holders, a 60:40-split rear seat, and multiple buttons on both the steering wheel and driver’s door, pointing to a well-equipped cabin.
Launch Timeline and Future Expectations
Hyundai confirmed during its Q2 2026 earnings call that the new Tucson will debut in South Korea in the fourth quarter of this year. However, global sales are not expected to start until sometime in 2027. This schedule aligns with the upcoming redesign of the Kia Sportage, Tucson’s close sibling, which is also set for next year.
The prototype’s exterior hints at major styling updates including new headlights and taillights, continuing Hyundai’s recent trend of bold lighting designs. The refresh should bring a more modern and aggressive look compared to the current generation.
Based on this latest sighting, Hyundai is continuing its approach of offering dramatic redesigns for the Tucson with each generation.
