Volkswagen once built a seven-seat SUV prototype based on the Amarok pickup truck but never released it. Now, with the third-generation Amarok in sight, the idea of a rugged SUV sibling could resurface, according to recent statements from VW Commercial Vehicles.
The Forgotten Amarok SUV Prototype
Hidden from the public, Volkswagen developed a body-on-frame SUV using the first-generation Amarok platform. This seven-seat model, called internally the “Amarok wagon,” was designed to compete with SUVs like the Ford Everest.
Despite having a strong foundation, VW did not approve the project for production. The main concern was limited market potential—especially since internal studies showed demand primarily in Australia. This meant it lacked the wider appeal needed for a global launch.
Design Revisited but Still on Hold
VW’s interest in an Amarok SUV did not disappear entirely. In past years, VW Commercial Vehicles’ head of design shared sketches of a second-generation Amarok SUV. However, this new pickup is based on a Ford Ranger platform, and the collaboration between VW and Ford does not currently include an SUV version.
What’s Next for Amarok?
- A third-generation Amarok is confirmed, expected around 2030.
- VW is in talks with Ford for future collaborations but no SUV plans are finalized.
- The first-generation Amarok will continue in South America until 2027, replaced by a model developed with China’s SAIC.
VW’s Off-Road SUV Offering: The Scout Traveler
Instead of an Amarok SUV, VW Group aims to fill the off-road SUV gap with the all-electric Scout Traveler. Set to enter production by 2027, it will offer about 350 miles of range and a range-extender option for over 500 miles. These vehicles will be built in the United States and priced under €55,000 (approx. $60,000).

The hidden Amarok SUV shows VW’s early awareness of the demand for rugged seven-seat SUVs. While it never came to market, the ongoing discussions and a new Amarok generation mean the idea could return. However, with VW focusing on cost-cutting and new electric models like the Scout, the Amarok SUV remains uncertain. Buyers seeking a body-on-frame SUV from VW might have to wait or look to the Scout for a future option.
