Michelin is preparing to launch a new generation of Pilot Sport tires, designed for sports and super sports cars. This latest range is heavily influenced by lessons learned in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), where Michelin serves as the exclusive tire supplier for the Hypercar category.
New Tires for Heavier and More Powerful Sports Cars
Over the last 30 years since the Pilot Sport line began, sports cars have become more powerful, heavier, and increasingly electrified. These changes mean tires need to handle greater forces and new technical demands. Michelin’s new Pilot Sport range reflects this shift, developing compounds and designs to meet the needs of modern performance vehicles.
According to Michelin, the development of these tires tracks closely with their experience in endurance racing. The WEC’s Hypercar class features three types of vehicles—LMH, LMDh hybrid, and LMDh combustion—that challenge tires with different architectures and powertrains. This variety makes the racing series a rigorous test ground for new tire technologies before they reach the road.

From Racing Track to Road Tires
Michelin’s relationship between racing and road tire technology goes beyond simply transferring innovations from track tires to street models. It includes extensive simulation work, advanced material research, and industrial processes that evolve over many years.
For each consumer tire, Michelin spends around ten years in research and predevelopment, then two to three years finalizing the product alongside car makers and factories. Racing trials accelerate this process by identifying solutions in extreme conditions that can later be adapted.
Notably, Michelin uses the same simulation platforms for both racing and road tire development to optimize performance characteristics like grip consistency and durability. Additionally, technologies like C3M, an industrial 3D printing technique already seen in some racing and super sports tires, contribute to the new generation.

Focus on Driving Feel, Not Just Performance Numbers
Michelin emphasizes that today’s super sports tires need to offer more than just raw performance. The feel of the tire under the car and how it communicates with the driver is central to the new Pilot Sport design. This balanced approach aims to deliver grip, responsiveness, and precision that match the driving experience expected from high-end sports cars.
While Michelin has not yet revealed details like tire sizes, commercial names, or exact release dates, the company says the new tires are very close to market introduction. They are being developed closely with some of the most demanding sports car manufacturers, suggesting they will first appear as original equipment on upcoming super sports cars.

Michelin’s Broad Tire Development Background
Besides this new Pilot Sport series, Michelin has long been a leading tire maker worldwide, covering a broad product range from bicycles to aviation.
The company’s extensive development capabilities and factories, including the large facility in Valladolid, Spain, support its global market reach. Michelin continues to innovate in tire compounds and designs, making it a top choice for performance and durability across many vehicle types.
