Maserati Plans Dual-Country Production for New Electric Models

Maserati is reportedly working on two new electric vehicles—a large SUV and a grand touring (GT) model—under a growing partnership with Huawei and JAC Motors. Emerging information suggests the vehicles will be built partly in China and finished in Italy.

Two Electric Maseratis in Development

Sources close to the project indicate Maserati’s next electric lineup will include a big SUV, potentially expanding or replacing the Grecale Folgore, and a large electric GT aimed to succeed the GranTurismo Folgore. Interestingly, current internal discussions lean towards launching the electric GT first, rather than the SUV.

The collaboration pools strengths from each partner: Huawei is expected to provide technology such as its HarmonyOS infotainment system and Qiankun advanced driver-assistance features, while JAC will handle much of the engineering and initial manufacturing work. Maserati will focus on design, branding, and its global sales network.

Split Production Between China and Italy

One of the more noteworthy details is the plan for a semi knock-down (SKD) production strategy. The vehicles would start production at JAC’s plant in Hefei, China, then be shipped to Italy for final assembly, including interior customization and finishing touches. This approach is intended to reduce costs while maintaining Maserati’s luxury standards.

Maserati aims to utilize its Italian facilities, such as the Cassino plant, more efficiently through this process. So rather than choosing between manufacturing fully in China or Italy, the brand might adopt a hybrid solution leveraging both countries’ resources.

Branding and Market Strategy

For sales, the vehicles will have a dual identity. In China, the models would be sold under the Maextro brand, a new name stemming from the Huawei-JAC partnership. Outside China, they will carry the Maserati badge and Trident emblem, appealing to Maserati’s established international customers.

The first international markets targeted are said to be the Middle East and key European countries including Italy, France, and Germany. Maserati would reportedly retain primary control over these overseas markets.

Details Still Unconfirmed

The cooperation between Maserati, Huawei, and JAC has entered a more concrete phase with these production and product plans. However, the arrangement has yet to be officially announced by Stellantis or Maserati. Confirmation is expected by the end of this year, with more specifics likely to follow.
