Audi is developing the first-ever RS versions of the Q5 and Q5 Sportback, expanding its sporty SUV range. Recent spy photos show both models with updated styling and suggest they will share the electrified powertrain from the new RS 5 lineup.
Distinctive Exterior Changes Mark the RS Models
The latest prototypes reveal several notable visual updates. The front grille is significantly larger and taller, featuring a new pattern and a horizontal slat designed for the license plate.
The bumpers have been redesigned, showing sportier air intakes up front. While the hood, fenders, and headlights remain unchanged, the wheel arches are noticeably wider, likely to accommodate a broader track. New side skirts and exclusive alloy wheels set the RS apart from the standard Q5 models.
At the rear, the RS Q5 models sport a different bumper with a diffuser and large dual exhaust tips. Badging is expected on the tailgate’s left side, along with other RS emblems inside the cabin.
RS-Style Interior and Technology Updates
Inside, the RS Q5 and RS Q5 Sportback will keep the digital instruments and infotainment sizes from the Q5 family—an 11.9-inch cluster and 14.5-inch central screen. However, these displays will have unique RS-themed interfaces and menus. The passenger display is expected to remain available.
Sportier front seats with integrated headrests and extra bolstering will replace the regular seats. An exclusive steering wheel and special RS upholstery and trim will underline the cars’ performance focus.
Electrified Powertrain Expected to Mirror RS 5
The RS Q5 models appear set to adopt a similar hybrid powertrain as Audi’s RS 5. That setup combines a 503 hp (375 kW) internal combustion engine with a 174 hp (130 kW) electric motor. Together, they deliver about 630 hp (470 kW) and 608 lb-ft (825 Nm) of torque.
This plug-in hybrid system allows short electric-only driving ranges, adding a practical eco-friendly aspect to the performance SUV.
Market Position and Launch Timing
The Audi RS Q5 and RS Q5 Sportback are expected to debut within a few months, likely as 2027 models in the US market. This comes at a time when key competitors like BMW’s X3 M and X4 M, as well as the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, have left the market or changed their focus.
The current 2026 Q5 starts at $52,800, and the SQ5 at $65,400, with the Sportback trims priced slightly higher. The RS models will slot at the top, aiming to dominate the sportier segment of the mid-size luxury SUV market.
