Mercedes-AMG is testing an updated version of the GLC 53 Coupe, aiming for a 2028 model year release. The mid-cycle refresh introduces subtle design tweaks and could signal the return of a more powerful V8-powered version in the lineup.
Visible Updates on the 2028 GLC 53 Coupe
The current-generation GLC debuted in 2022 but AMG has already started work on a facelift for the GLC 53 Coupe. A prototype recently spotted at the Nürburgring features camouflage on its front and rear sections. Despite the covering, the car maintains its existing body shape, hinting at mild revisions rather than a redesign.
New taillights are clearly seen, adopting a star-like pattern that echoes the refreshed front lights. The rear bumper and diffuser appear unchanged in this early test model, though production versions are expected to receive updated styling in these areas. AMG’s signature four round exhaust tips remain, possibly with new trim to freshen their look.
Inside, the familiar portrait-style infotainment screen and tablet-like gauge cluster should continue. Changes likely include a redesigned steering wheel and updated upholstery and trim, aligning with typical mid-cycle refresh upgrades.
Powertrain and Potential V8 Comeback
The current GLC 53 is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mild-hybrid help, delivering 443 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds. This engine will probably carry over with some tuning for the facelift.
Interestingly, Mercedes-AMG recently introduced the CLE 646, a model featuring a 4.0-liter flat-plane crank V8 producing 637 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with mild hybrid tech and achieves 0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.
While not confirmed, there is speculation the GLC might rejoin the V8 segment with a GLC 63 model powered by this new V8. If so, that would mark a return to the high-powered GLC that AMG offered before switching to the GLC 53 for 2027.
Market Details and Pricing Outlook
The refreshed GLC 53 Coupe is expected to arrive for the 2028 model year, with a formal reveal likely within the coming months. The current model in the US starts at about $75,900, excluding extras, with the facelift version possibly commanding a slight price increase.
In comparison, the regular GLC SUV starts lower, with base prices from $52,400 up to $69,900 for the AMG 53 trim. The facelift will primarily focus on the coupe’s design and interior upgrades, with powertrain changes limited unless the rumored V8 variant materializes.
While the new look preserves the GLC 53 Coupe’s sporty character, the updated lighting and interior details aim to keep the model competitive in a busy luxury SUV segment. More official information will emerge as Mercedes-AMG approaches the facelift’s launch.
