Hyundai is preparing to launch the next-generation Tucson compact crossover with improved hybrid power and updated engine options. The new model, debuting in South Korea in late 2026 and globally in 2027, will offer a hybrid version featuring a turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline engine with increased horsepower and torque.
Upgraded Hybrid Powertrain Offers Slight Performance Boost
The new Tucson hybrid is rated at 242 hp and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque, marking an increase of 11 hp and 9 lb-ft (12 Nm) compared to the previous generation. This power boost helps the hybrid model accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.5 seconds, shaving 0.3 seconds off the old model’s time. While the increase improves performance, Hyundai’s main focus remains on fuel efficiency.
Fuel economy is claimed at 17.4 km per liter under the Korean test cycle, which roughly translates to 41 mpg. However, these figures might differ from EPA ratings, as the new Tucson is larger and likely heavier than its predecessor. This size increase could offset some efficiency gains made by the updated hybrid system.
Non-Hybrid 1.6-Liter Turbo Engine Also Available
Alongside the hybrid, Hyundai will offer a non-electrified 1.6-liter turbocharged engine in the sixth-generation Tucson. This version produces about 177 hp and 160 lb-ft (217 Nm), which is roughly 27% less horsepower and 43% less torque than the hybrid setup. The conventional engine will take around 9.5 seconds to reach 62 mph, a full second slower than the hybrid.
Fuel economy for the non-hybrid Tucson will be significantly lower, with Hyundai stating a 43% drop compared to the hybrid model. Buyers considering the non-electrified version might face higher running costs but could benefit from a lower purchase price, especially in markets where hybrid prices remain high.
Potential for Other Powertrain Variants
Hyundai has not confirmed additional powertrains, but it’s plausible the Tucson could be offered with a plug-in hybrid or a diesel engine in specific markets. These options would likely depend on regional emissions regulations and customer demand.
Launch Timeline and Global Availability
The all-new Tucson is set to arrive in South Korea in the last quarter of 2026. A global rollout will follow in 2027, expanding the availability of this refreshed model with its enhanced hybrid system and updated gasoline engine.
