Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Spotted Testing with 226 HP Ahead of Launch

The sporty electric Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI has been seen on public roads during its final development phase. This electric hot hatch combines over 220 horsepower with an expected range of around 426 kilometres (WLTP), preparing for a launch later this year.

Final Testing on Open Roads

After its initial reveal, the ID. Polo GTI is still undergoing real-world tests to fine-tune its performance and reliability. Recently captured in uncamouflaged form, the test car was spotted driving in southern Europe under normal traffic conditions. Unlike earlier prototypes, this car wears a white paint finish instead of the bright red showcased at launch but retains the signature GTI styling touches like a distinctive grille, bumpers, and alloy wheels.

These last tests help Volkswagen adjust the behaviour of the electric Polo GTI in various driving scenarios. This phase ensures any final issues are addressed before customer deliveries start early next year.

Powertrain and Market Positioning

The ID. Polo GTI sits at the top of the ID. Polo range, offering 166 kW (226 hp) and 290 Nm of torque from its front-wheel-drive electric motor. It runs on a 52 kWh NMC battery pack, which supports a WLTP-rated range of about 426 kilometres. This combination targets sporty driving while maintaining respectable range.

Volkswagen aims for the ID. Polo GTI to compete directly with electric rivals like the Peugeot e-208 GTI and Opel Corsa GSE. The company has set a starting price below €33,000 after discounts, making it one of the more accessible electric hot hatches in the market.

Sales Timeline

The ID. Polo GTI will officially hit showrooms before the end of 2024, with first customer deliveries expected in the first half of 2027. This timeline suggests Volkswagen is taking extra care to prepare for a smooth market introduction in the growing electric sporty segment.
