Volkswagen Amarok Third Generation Expected with Hybrid and Electric Options

Volkswagen is reportedly preparing a third-generation Amarok pickup truck that could arrive by 2029 or 2030. The new Amarok is expected to offer both plug-in hybrid and full electric versions, marking a major shift toward electrification for this popular mid-size ute.

Electrification and New Platform Choices

The upcoming Amarok will likely depart from its current Ford-developed underpinnings, as Volkswagen’s partnership with Ford is set to end around that time. The company has yet to finalize if the new model will continue as a traditional body-on-frame truck or switch to a unibody design.

Both options remain on the table, with Volkswagen possibly continuing collaboration with Ford for the next Ranger or, alternatively, using one of its Chinese partnerships for a different platform. Meanwhile, South America is expected to receive a new Amarok variant based on the SAIC Maxus Terron 9, already known in markets like Australia as the MG U9.

While official images are unavailable, a virtual artist known as “Theottle” created CGI renderings of what the third-generation Amarok might look like. The design shows a sleek mid-size pickup with a single low grille, LED daytime running light bars, separate vertical LED headlights, and hidden door handles for a smoother profile.

The rear features a modern bumper with ‘winged’ LED tail lights and a black roll cage in the cargo bed, accompanied by black alloy wheels and a two-tone paint job. However, these visuals are purely speculative and based on current trends rather than confirmed details.

Volkswagen has kept the Amarok name alive with the current generation launched in 2022, which shares its platform with the Ford Ranger. Yet, the third-generation model could reshape the pickup with new technology and electrified powertrains, signaling a fresh direction for Volkswagen in the ute market.
