Stellantis is teaming up with Dongfeng to produce four new electrified vehicles in Wuhan from 2027. This includes two new Peugeot models and two Jeep SUVs designed with off-road capabilities. The Jeep models will mark the brand’s return to local production after ending its previous partnership with GAC in 2022.
New Joint Venture to Support Electrified Models
A newly registered company called Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën Technology (Wuhan) Co., Ltd. will be involved in this project. While Stellantis and Dongfeng have not clarified what role this new entity will play, its name suggests it will focus on the French brands.
This new venture is separate from the existing Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën Automobile joint venture, which already manages the Wuhan factory.
Details on Peugeot and Jeep Electrified Vehicles
The two upcoming Jeep models are described as off-road vehicles that fit China’s NEV (New Energy Vehicle) category. This means they could be battery-electric, plug-in hybrids, or use range extenders, but so far, specifics about their powertrains, platforms, or battery sizes have not been shared.
Stellantis confirmed these Jeep models will also be exported outside China, but it’s unclear which countries will receive them or if the U.S. will be included. There is no indication they will be related to existing Jeep models like the Wrangler or Wagoneer S.
For Peugeot, the two new models are expected to draw design inspiration from the concepts shown at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, but further design and technical details have not been released.
Investment and Strategic Shift
The program represents a significant investment of over 8 billion yuan (around $1.18 billion), with Stellantis contributing about $150 million directly. Jeep’s return to local production with Dongfeng marks a fresh approach after the end of its previous China partnership with GAC.
Instead of making vehicles primarily for the Chinese market as before, Stellantis now plans to develop models aimed at both domestic and international markets from the start.
The project still needs final approvals before production can begin, so more details are expected in the lead-up to the 2027 launch.
