Renault Updates R5 Electric to Stay Ahead in Europe’s EV Market

Renault is refreshing its popular R5 electric car for 2027 with new customization options and price cuts in Germany. The move aims to strengthen the R5’s position as one of Europe’s top-selling small electric cars amid growing competition, especially from Chinese brands.

R5 Remains a Top Electric Seller in Europe

The Renault 5 E-Tech continues to do well in 2026, ranking as the fourth best-selling electric car in Europe so far. It has achieved over 45,600 registrations in the first half of the year, according to official Renault data. The model is particularly successful in Germany, with 4,500 units registered during the same period, making it the best-selling small electric car there.

In Spain, the R5’s affordable pricing combined with a government subsidy means the cheapest electric version starts at just €18,556 after the €4,500 Plan Auto+ rebate. Across Europe, this strategy has helped the model reach over 71,000 registrations in the first six months of 2026.

Price Cut and New Features in Germany

In Germany, Renault has introduced a €1,710 price cut across all R5 trims for the 2027 model year. This puts the base version, which has a 122 hp motor and 40 kWh battery, starting just over €26,000. Besides the price drop, higher trims gain new features focused on comfort and safety.

From the “Techno” trim upward, a new cooled wireless charging pad for smartphones has been added. This uses a magnetic ring technology to charge quickly without overheating. The “MULTI-SENSE” driving modes system also gains an intelligent mode that automatically switches between Eco, Comfort, and Sport modes based on how the car is driven.

For the top trims—“Iconic Five” and “Roland Garros”—several safety features that were previously optional now come as standard. These include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Passenger exit warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert when reversing
  • Active driving assistant with emergency stop
  • Adaptive cruise control with lane centering

More Personalization Options Coming Later This Year

Starting in the last quarter of 2026, Renault will offer additional visual customization choices for the R5. Two new paint colors will join the lineup: the vibrant “Rojo DeZir” red and the sporty “Gris Dolomita” gray. New 18-inch alloy wheels painted in gold will also be available.

Those wanting a bolder look can choose from four new graphic decals for the roof and doors. These are available in two styles, “Hyper5” and “Vibrant5,” and come in black, red, or gold.

Strategic Move to Maintain Market Leadership

The timing of these updates is significant. Renault’s strong R5 sales have helped the company return to profitability in early 2026, posting a net income of €705 million compared to losses the previous year. Renault’s electric vehicle sales grew by nearly 48% during this period, with the R5 leading the way.

The updated pricing and new features aim to keep the R5 competitive as Renault prepares to launch the electric Twingo, which is expected to build on the R5’s legacy of affordable, distinctive electric cars.
