Nissan is testing the next version of its popular Qashqai SUV, set to launch as a 2028 model. Recent spy photos show a heavily camouflaged prototype out on public roads in southern Europe, suggesting Nissan is preparing an important update rather than a full redesign.
Focus on Hybrid Tech as Electric Version Is Delayed
Earlier plans for an all-electric Qashqai have been postponed due to Nissan’s current financial challenges and slower growth in some EV markets. Instead, the focus shifts to improving the hybrid powertrain options. Nissan’s e-Power system, which uses a small petrol engine alongside electric motors, is expected to play a bigger role in the updated lineup.
The current Qashqai model received a facelift in 2024, bringing design and technology improvements. This new 2028 version looks to continue that trend, addressing competition from rising Chinese SUVs in the compact segment.
Exterior and Interior Changes Seen on Prototypes
The spy shots reveal the prototype’s front grille is almost completely covered, hinting at a redesigned front end. Other design details remain hidden by camouflage, but the overall shape suggests no major body changes.
More significant updates are likely inside, where Nissan plans to introduce a more digital and connected driver interface. This could resemble the latest setup found in the new Nissan LEAF, aligning the Qashqai’s cabin technology with the brand’s newest models.
