Renault’s E-Space Concept Revives the 1984 Espace as an Electric Family MPV

Renault is bringing back the spirit of its original 1984 Espace with the new E-Space Concept, an electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) designed for family travel. This concept will be the highlight of Renault’s display at the upcoming Paris Motor Show starting October 12.

Retro Design with Electric Ambitions

The E-Space Concept draws clear inspiration from the first-generation Espace, moving away from the SUV style that currently dominates the model line. It is a 4.7-meter long MPV featuring a distinctive U-shaped LED light signature both front and rear. The front panel sports a pixelated LED design with the Renault logo prominently in the center, updating design elements seen previously on models like the Clio and Mégane.

Renault has kept technical details like battery capacity, motor power, and charging specs under wraps for now. The company is expected to follow its recent strategy of using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, known for stability and longevity. The concept serves as a way to gauge consumer interest in an electric MPV, a body style largely overshadowed by SUVs for years, including in the Espace lineup itself.

Features and Technology Highlights

The concept is likely to incorporate features familiar from Renault’s electric vehicles, such as the One Pedal driving mode and integration with Google’s Gemini AI assistant via over-the-air software updates. This aligns with Renault’s focus on making vehicles centered around user experience and electrification.

Other Renault Concepts at Paris 2026

Alongside the E-Space Concept, Renault will present two other electric concept models at the Paris Motor Show:

  • Renault 8 Gordini Concept: A two-seater coupe inspired by Renault’s racing heritage dating back to the 1960s and 70s. This model pays tribute to the original 8 TS, important in historic Renault racing series, and projects a sporty, electric future.
  • Renault 4 JP4X4: A modern take on the classic Renault 4’s Plein Air and JP4 versions, combining a relaxed outdoor lifestyle vibe with all-wheel drive capability.

The show will also feature the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, the revamped Mégane E-Tech with a new 67 kWh LFP battery promising up to 500 km of WLTP range, and updates to the Twingo, including a new panoramic glass roof. Commercial vehicles like the Trafic Furgón E-Tech BEV will be refreshed for next year as well.

Renewed Interest in Electric MPVs?

The E-Space Concept represents Renault’s attempt to revive the MPV format in an electric form, in contrast to the widespread SUV trend. If successful, it could mark a shift in family transport preferences toward more spacious, versatile, and eco-friendly vehicles.

More details about specifications and production plans are expected closer to the concept’s official unveiling in Paris.
