Renault is set to stand trial in Paris in April 2027 over accusations of manipulating the emissions of its diesel engines. French authorities accuse the automaker of cheating emissions tests on diesel engines made between 2009 and 2017, a scandal reminiscent of the 2015 Volkswagen Dieselgate.
Accusations Focus on Euro 5 and Euro 6 Diesel Engines
The case targets Renault diesel engines produced from September 2009 to January 2017. These engines comply with the Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards. The public prosecutor alleges Renault used illegal calibration methods to lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions during laboratory tests. However, the vehicles reportedly emitted higher NOx levels during real-world driving conditions.
This difference in emissions under test conditions versus actual road use is similar to what Volkswagen faced in its Dieselgate scandal, which led to fines of around €32 billion globally.
Renault Rejects Fraud Claims
Renault denies the accusations. In an official statement, the company emphasized that their vehicles are not equipped with devices designed to detect or manipulate emissions tests. Renault cited a recent ruling by the London High Court, which dismissed claims against it from hedge funds looking to profit from similar allegations.
The automaker pledged to defend the professionalism and ethics of its 100,000 employees during the upcoming trial.
Other Automakers Also Under French Investigation
Renault is not alone in facing scrutiny. French authorities are investigating several manufacturers over potential emissions test fraud. Volkswagen remains under investigation alongside several brands from the Stellantis group, including Peugeot and Citroën. These brands have produced BlueHDi engines since 2013, which comply with Euro 6 standards.
Fiat, which was an independent entity before becoming a part of Stellantis, is also involved in the investigations covering the same period. So far, Renault is the first manufacturer in France to have a trial date set.
