BMW is developing a fully electric version of its high-performance X5 M, set to launch in early 2028. This new model marks a shift away from the traditional gasoline V8 engine, aiming for nearly 1,000 horsepower from four electric motors.
A Radical Change for the X5 M
The upcoming X5 M prototype has been spotted in spy photos showing a design that departs significantly from previous combustion-engine models. Notably, the front end features redesigned headlights without the signature “X” pattern and a larger, more angular double kidney grille. The front bumper is also more aggressive, including hidden ventilation vents on the hood, hinting at increased cooling needs for the electric drivetrain.
The car rides on large alloy wheels measuring 21 inches as standard, with options for up to 23 inches. Big perforated brakes are visible on all corners, and optional carbon-ceramic discs are expected to handle the high-performance demands. The rear design remains partly camouflaged but appears to lose the four exhaust outlets typical of the current X5 M, confirming the electric setup.
Powertrain and Range Expectations
BMW’s electrified X5 M will use a four-motor setup, with one motor per wheel. This allows for advanced torque vectoring, with rear-wheel drive dominant in most situations and all-wheel drive activating when needed via the xDrive system.
The electric SUV will run on a sizeable 141 kWh lithium-ion battery pack featuring cylindrical cells (NMC chemistry). According to reports, this capacity should provide a maximum driving range close to 800 kilometres under the WLTP standard, although real-world range may vary.
Launch and Final Details
The next-gen X5 M arrives early in 2028, with sales expected to start in the summer. BMW has not confirmed whether a gasoline-powered or hybrid X5 M variant will continue alongside this electric model. Given current trends and the clear move towards electrification in BMW’s lineup, the fully electric X5 M is likely to be the top-performance SUV option.
