Next-Gen Peugeot 208 EV Spotted with Retro Boxy Shape and Steer-by-Wire

Spy photos have emerged showing Peugeot’s upcoming 2028 208 electric hatchback testing on public roads. The new model stands out with a boxier, more angular design that echoes the classic Peugeot 205, a significant shift from the curvier look of the current E-208. This fresh style appears to draw direct inspiration from Peugeot’s iconic 1980s supermini.

Retro Proportions Meet Futuristic Steering

While the prototype is heavily camouflaged, the sharper, squarer silhouette and flat roofline are visible, hinting at a deliberate nod to the 205’s timeless shape. Inside, a striking and unusual feature is a small rectangular steering wheel—an update likely linked to Peugeot’s use of steer-by-wire technology, which replaces the traditional mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels with electronic controls. This tech allows for more flexible cabin layouts and could enhance steering precision.

What This Means for the 208 EV

The move to a boxier design signals Peugeot’s aim to blend nostalgia with modern electric vehicle technology. Incorporating steer-by-wire could improve driver feedback and open the door for advanced driver assistance features, though it might require convincing buyers used to traditional steering feel. The prototype’s small wheel size and shape also suggest a focus on interior space and ergonomics.

Peugeot has not yet confirmed many technical details, including battery size, range, or motor output. The final production model may look different once camouflage is removed and the car enters full production. The 208 EV is expected to follow the trend of increasing driving range and modern interior tech but with a unique retro design twist.

More information will likely emerge closer to the official reveal or launch, expected in 2027 for the 2028 model year.
