Mercedes-Benz recently revealed spy photos of an advanced prototype for its upcoming electric E-Class sedan. Set to launch in 2027, this model represents a clear shift back to a more traditional three-box sedan shape, moving away from the bulbous styling of the current EQE and EQS electric sedans. The images provide a first detailed look at the production-ready headlights and taillights, hinting at the design and technology direction for this luxury electric vehicle.
Classic Design Replaces Current Curvy Styling
The spy shots show the E-Class electric prototype near the Nürburgring testing track, carrying minimal camouflage except for some vinyl coverings on the front and rear. The sedan measures about 4.8 metres long and presents a sharper, more defined front end with pointed headlights incorporating the iconic Mercedes star. This marks a notable return to the classic sedan silhouette, replacing the softer, almost jellybean-like shapes found on the existing EQE and EQS models.
The rear design also stands out, featuring slim horizontal taillights without visible star logos at this stage. The prototype wears AMG-style alloy wheels, though this does not necessarily indicate a high-performance variant in these particular images.
Technology and Performance Expectations
The cabin remains heavily camouflaged but is expected to follow Mercedes-Benz’s current electric model trend, featuring three large digital screens similar to those in other recent electric vehicles from the brand. Advanced driver-assistance systems are likely, with reports suggesting level 3 autonomous driving capabilities on highways, building on the technology seen in the electric CLA.
This new E-Class electric will use the MB.EA-M platform, which it shares with Mercedes’ first electric GLC SUV. Powertrain options are expected to include a single motor rear-wheel-drive setup and dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions under the 4MATIC badge, matching the configurations found in the EQ lineup.
Long Range and Testing Plans Ahead of 2027 Launch
Mercedes aims for the new E-Class electric to exceed 1,000 kilometres of range, a significant mark for luxury electric sedans. The prototype will continue testing at Nürburgring and undergo winter trials to validate battery performance, charging systems, and thermal comfort features.
The new model is anticipated to debut in mid-2027, with sales starting closer to 2028. Pricing details have not been announced yet, but based on the EQE’s market positioning, the E-Class electric could start above €70,000 in Spain before incentives.
