Mercedes-Benz is set to launch its new GLA Electric, the next step in its small electric SUV lineup. This model replaces the current EQA and shares much with the latest CLA and GLB, indicating a fresh generation despite the recentness of the current EQA.
Next-Generation Electric SUV Based on Latest Compact Models
The upcoming GLA Electric is built on the same platform as the newest CLA and GLB, marking a clear shift from the old MFA2 architecture used in the current EQA. While the combustion engine versions will continue under the GLA name, the all-electric model will carry the GLA Electric badge, similar to how the GLB handles its electric and gasoline versions separately.
Design Updates and Key Visuals from Spy Photos
Recent spy images show the prototype with less camouflage, revealing a substantially redesigned front end. The grille is lower and the headlights look slimmer and placed higher than before. The bumper now features a single central air intake, aligning the design more closely with other fresh Mercedes models. Outside these changes, the body looks like an evolution of the current GLA rather than a completely new design.
Technology and Powertrain Details
Inside, the model is expected to step up its tech game. Earlier leaks suggest an optional MBUX Superscreen will be available, combining two 14-inch displays with a separate 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. This upgrade means the cabin technology will be much more modern compared to the outgoing EQA.
The GLA Electric will offer both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The vehicle runs on an 800-volt electrical system, which supports faster charging speeds than the current setup. Mercedes is also developing an AMG variant, suggesting a sportier, high-performance electric version will join the lineup.
