Mercedes-Benz is testing a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant of its all-new 2027 VLE luxury people carrier. A recent prototype spotted in Europe reveals key differences from the battery-electric edition launched earlier this year.
Prototype Shows Both Fuel and Charge Ports
The 2027 VLE was introduced in March 2026 as a fully electric vehicle. However, this new prototype features an open front grille supplying airflow to a radiator—something unnecessary for the BEV model’s cooling needs. Alongside the grille, an obvious fuel filler door appears on the driver’s side, confirming support for liquid fuel as well.
Adding to the clues, the prototype has a hidden exhaust muffler tucked underneath. This muffler is a clear sign that the vehicle uses an internal combustion engine alongside electric power, essential for a plug-in hybrid setup.

Plug-In Hybrid Could Widen VLE’s Appeal
Including both a fuel door and a charging port shows Mercedes-Benz is preparing to offer a PHEV alongside the fully electric version. This approach will likely attract buyers looking for a luxury people mover with flexible energy options, especially where charging infrastructure is limited.
The 2027 VLE PHEV is expected to share much of its design and technology with the BEV, but with added powertrain components. Details such as engine size, battery capacity, electric range, and release date remain unconfirmed.
As Mercedes-Benz tests the prototype further, more details about the hybrid system and its performance should emerge. The plug-in hybrid version could arrive shortly after or alongside the BEV, broadening the lineup in the growing luxury electric people carrier segment.
