Maserati’s Sales Drop 37% in H1 2026 as Brand Targets Exclusivity Over Volume

Maserati’s sales fell sharply in the first half of 2026, with registrations dropping 37% compared to last year. However, the Italian brand says this is part of a deliberate shift away from chasing high volumes. Instead, Maserati is focusing on exclusivity, quality, and profitability as it reshapes its lineup and strategy.

New Strategy Focuses on Quality and Customization

After relying on models like the Ghibli, Quattroporte, and Levante for years, Maserati faced challenges from aging products and an underperforming electric car launch. The brand now aims to produce fewer cars—between 15,000 and 20,000 annually—but with greater customer focus and exclusivity.

  • Emphasis on made-to-order vehicles tailored to individual buyers
  • More aggressive, sporty designs inspired by the MCXtrema
  • Upcoming GT4 model based on the GranTurismo
  • Titanium exhausts for GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and MCPura to enhance sound
  • Expansion of the V6 Nettuno engine across Grecale variants (390 to 550 hp)
  • Expected Grecale update in 2027 with new hybrid powertrains

Future Models and Industrial Partnerships

Maserati’s longer-term plans include a new large luxury SUV to replace the Levante and a new Quattroporte sedan. However, these depend on an industrial partnership currently under negotiation. As a result, their launch may be delayed until around 2029 or 2030.

Sales Performance by Market

Despite the brand’s strategic shift, sales have yet to stabilize. Maserati registered 2,737 cars in Europe and other key markets from January to June 2026, down from 4,366 in the same period last year.

  • United States remains largest market but saw a 46% drop to 876 registrations
  • Italy followed with 623 units (-39%), with low interest in electric models
  • Japan and Germany declined by 27% and 28%, respectively
  • Positive growth in the UK (+24%), Switzerland (+20%), and Luxembourg (+24%)
  • Steep declines in Spain, Australia, France, Turkey, and the Netherlands
  • June 2026 showed signs of sales decline slowing in some markets

Why It Matters

Maserati’s acceptance of lower sales volumes reflects a clear pivot to a luxury brand focused on exclusivity rather than high volume. While registrations are down sharply, stabilizing sales and enhancing brand desirability are key goals ahead of new model launches. This quieter phase could set the stage for Maserati’s next chapter in premium performance cars and electrification.
