Land Rover is developing a smaller version of its iconic Defender, often called the “Baby” Defender. While the official name hasn’t been announced, it may be called the Defender Sport or possibly Defender 80. This compact SUV aims to compete directly with Mercedes’ upcoming smaller G-Class model, known as the “Mini G.”
New Platform and Hybrid Powertrain Confirmed
The “Baby” Defender is built on Land Rover’s new EMA platform. This architecture is shared with future Range Rover models, including the next-generation Velar and possibly the Evoque. Unlike Land Rover’s original plan for a fully electric version, the new Defender will feature a self-charging hybrid system instead. Sources say the platform is being adapted to support this hybrid setup, and front-wheel-drive versions are unlikely.
Distinct Design with Familiar Defender Features
Spy photos of prototypes reveal a SUV that keeps some classic Defender design cues such as the front fascia and angular roof and pillars. The body is heavily camouflaged, but the shape suggests a rugged yet compact vehicle that remains true to Land Rover’s style. The “Baby” Defender will be positioned below the current Defender 90, although using the “Defender 80” name might confuse some buyers.
Rivals and Market Timing
Land Rover’s new Defender is set to arrive in selected markets around 2027, with a possible reveal by the end of 2026. Its closest rival, Mercedes’ “Mini G-Class,” is also expected in 2027. Like Land Rover’s offshoot, Mercedes initially planned a fully electric compact G model but has shifted towards offering hybrid versions instead. Both vehicles will feature premium interiors and tech, targeting buyers wanting a smaller, rugged luxury SUV.
This development shows Land Rover’s intent to expand its lineup with a compact, off-road-capable model to match competitors’ moves in the shrinking luxury SUV segment.
