BMW has taken the X5 to new lengths in China, offering a long-wheelbase version that surpasses even the X7 in size. This stretched X5 includes features and interior touches not available on models sold elsewhere.
Bigger and Longer Than Ever
The Chinese long-wheelbase X5 stretches its wheelbase to 3,165 mm (124.6 inches), which is about 130 mm (5.1 inches) longer than the standard model. This extends the rear doors and side windows, creating more space inside. Interestingly, this makes it longer than BMW’s own three-row X7 SUV.
On the outside, BMW has tweaked the front end with slightly different light bars next to the vertical illuminated kidney grille. The distinctive ‘double-X’ headlight pattern can be turned on or off via the main infotainment screen, just like on the regular X5. The rear features a new roof-spoiler camera, likely for driver-assistance functions tailored to China.
A Unique Rear Display and Upgraded Comfort
The biggest surprise hides inside. This X5 includes the “Theatre Screen,” a 31.3-inch 8K display that stretches across the rear cabin. First introduced on the long-wheelbase 7 Series, this massive screen supports video calls, streaming, and gaming—features aimed at enhancing rear passenger experience in China.
The seats are upgraded for more comfort, and adaptive two-axle air suspension comes standard. The front passenger also benefits from a 14.6-inch touchscreen beside a 17.9-inch infotainment display. Another high-tech touch is the “Panoramic Vision” heads-up display, extending across the windshield with both fixed and customizable widgets for the driver. This feature has appeared on BMW’s iX3 and i3 models in China.
Longer Range for the Electric iX5
BMW is also offering an electric iX5 variant in China. The iX5 uses a battery and electric drive setup similar to European and US models, but the Chinese version is rated to travel 621 miles (1,000 km) on a single charge according to the CLTC cycle. However, this figure should be taken cautiously since CLTC tests often give optimistic results compared to the WLTP or EPA standards used elsewhere. For comparison, the European iX5 is rated up to 525 miles (845 km) WLTP, and the US version has an estimated EPA range of 435 miles (700 km).
Launch Timing and Market Focus
Both the combustion-engine X5 and the electric iX5 with the extended wheelbase are set to arrive in China in early 2027. These models show how BMW adapts its SUVs to meet local preferences, especially for rear-seat luxury and tech features.
This long-wheelbase X5 is a clear example of how carmakers create special versions for China’s market, where rear passenger comfort is especially prized. Whether or not this approach will extend to other markets remains to be seen.
