BMW has introduced new versions of the X5 and the fully electric iX5 designed specifically for the Chinese market. These models feature an extended wheelbase for more rear-seat space and include digital upgrades tailored to local preferences.
130 mm Longer Wheelbase for Added Comfort
The standout change in the BMW X5 and iX5 for China is their longer wheelbase, extended by 130 millimetres compared to other markets. This brings the total wheelbase to 3,165 mm, improving cabin space, especially for rear passengers.
This longer wheelbase also affects the vehicles’ side profile, giving them a more elongated and elegant look while enhancing driving stability and comfort.
Distinct Design and Advanced Lighting Features
The front end design has been updated with unique diagonal light icons that can be switched to a double-X pattern depending on buyer preference. Between these light icons and the signature kidney grille, light strips add depth and contribute to welcome and goodbye light animations.
These elements help differentiate the models from other global versions while preserving the characteristic BMW styling.
Luxury Interior with Neue Klasse Technology
Inside, the X5 and iX5 for China bring a fresh design with cleaner lines and a mostly monochrome color scheme that boosts a calm and refined atmosphere. Specially designed seats improve comfort for both front and rear passengers.
Premium materials like slate and glass are used throughout, alongside 3D backlit accent strips that light up the cabin ambiance.
The new BMW Panoramic iDrive display features BMW Operating System X and includes a floating Central Display along with a BMW Passenger Screen, which is a first for the X5 in China.
Additionally, the BMW Theatre Screen offers 8K streaming and gaming for rear passengers, plus video call functionality that streamlines working while on the move.
Driving Dynamics and Safety Tech
Both the X5 and iX5 are equipped with adaptive two-axle air suspension as standard. This setup helps smooth out rough roads and ensures a comfortable ride.
BMW is also introducing a new generation of driver assistance systems developed in partnership with Chinese AI firm Momenta. These systems support “Address-to-Address” navigation-guided assistance, combining BMW’s experience with locally trained artificial intelligence for safer, more reliable driving conditions.
Launch Details and Powertrain Options
The combustion-engine BMW X5 will be sold alongside the all-electric BMW iX5, which uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. The iX5’s advanced high-voltage battery enables an electric range exceeding 1,000 kilometres according to the CLTC standard used in China.
Both models are planned to launch on the Chinese market in 2027.
