BMW Unveils 2027 3 Series with Up to 443 HP and i3-Inspired Design

BMW has officially introduced the 2027 version of its 3 Series sedan, marking the eighth generation of the model. This update drops diesel engines entirely, offering only petrol powertrains with mild hybrid technology. The design takes clear cues from BMW’s electric i3, bringing fresh styling and advanced tech to the popular compact executive car.

New Design Echoes the Electric i3

The 2027 BMW 3 Series shows a bold new look influenced by the BMW i3 electric model. Its front end features a distinctive double kidney grille and slim headlight units with the brand’s signature daytime running lights. The side profile reveals pronounced wheel arches accentuating a sporty, wide stance. Measuring 4.77 meters in length, the sedan rides on BMW’s CLAR platform, which supports the long 2.86-meter wheelbase.

At the back, the taillights are notably thin and horizontally oriented, giving the car a modern appearance. Depending on the trim, the styling can lean toward an elegant or a more aggressive sporty look. Customers can personalize the 3 Series with alloy wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches and choose from various exterior paints, including the new metallic blue called M Le Castellet.

Interior and Technology Reflect i3’s Digital Setup

Inside, the 3 Series adopts the digital cockpit first seen in the BMW i3 electric model. The centerpiece is a 17.9-inch touchscreen angled toward the driver, controlling the BMW Panoramic iDrive system. The instrument cluster behind the steering wheel is replaced by optional BMW Panoramic Vision and 3D Head-Up Display projections, showing driving information directly in the driver’s view.

The steering wheel design is new, and the cabin offers a mix of comfort and high technology. For safety and convenience, the car includes level 2 driving assistance systems. One highlight is the new highway assistant that enables hands-free driving up to 130 km/h. BMW plans to add more semi-autonomous features in urban areas guided by navigation later on.

Only Gasoline Engines with Mild Hybrid Tech at Launch

BMW has confirmed there will be no diesel engines for the new 3 Series, focusing exclusively on petrol models equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid (MHEV) systems. The petrol lineup starts with a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine, available in two power outputs: 156 horsepower for the base 318 and 211 horsepower for the 320. The flagship is the M350 xDrive with a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine producing 443 horsepower and featuring all-wheel drive.

All engines come paired with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The petrol 318 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds, while the M350 xDrive completes the sprint in just 4.1 seconds. Fuel consumption ranges from about 6.5 to 7.5 liters per 100 km depending on the version.

Launch Plans and Pricing

The new BMW 3 Series will begin taking orders before the end of this year, but customer deliveries will not start until the first quarter of 2027. Series production will take place in BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany, with engines manufactured in Steyr, Austria.

Starting prices in Germany are around €49,100 for the entry-level 318 petrol model. The high-performance M350 xDrive starts at about €86,100. During 2027, BMW will expand the range with additional customization options and will introduce a plug-in hybrid version, offering a new electrified alternative to the petrol lineup.

The updated 3 Series aims to keep BMW competitive in the premium D-segment by blending fresh styling inspired by its electric sibling with modern technology and improved petrol engines.
