New Rear Lights and Fresh Design Cues
Recent spy images show a heavily camouflaged 2027 BMW 5 Series prototype undergoing testing in southern Europe. Despite the thick covering, the rear lights have been finalized and are visible, hinting at a production-ready look. The design will follow BMW’s latest “Neue Klasse” styling, sharing some elements with the upcoming new 3 Series.
Updated Interior and Tech Features Expected
Besides exterior changes, the 2027 5 Series will get significant interior upgrades. BMW plans to boost digitalization and connectivity, add more driver assistance systems, and expand customization options. These steps aim to keep the model competitive amid rising demands for tech and safety.
Powertrain Highlights: Plug-in Hybrid with More Power and Range
The mechanical setup will largely carry over from the current model, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and the fully electric i5. The photographed prototype is the 530e plug-in hybrid version. It combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver over 300 horsepower—a noticeable increase from today’s model.
This PHEV will also feature a larger-capacity nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, which should extend its electric-only driving range. With this setup, the car is expected to qualify for the Spanish DGT’s zero emissions label, granting access to low-emission zones and other benefits.
Launch Timeline and Availability
While development has been ongoing for more than a year, BMW plans to officially reveal the updated 5 Series in the second quarter of 2027. It should reach dealerships towards the end of next year. This timeline suggests BMW is aiming to keep the model fresh until its next full redesign, likely linked to the Neue Klasse architecture rollout.
