BMW is working on a new M760 xDrive version for the upcoming 7 Series set for release around mid-2027. Spy photos and sources confirm that the flagship sedan will return to a powerful pure petrol V8 setup, rather than relying solely on plug-in hybrid technology for top performance.
Return of the Pure V8 in a Luxury Sedan
The new BMW M760 aims to revive the brand’s tradition of high-performance petrol engines within the 7 Series range. Unlike the current M760e M Performance model, which teams a V8 with electric motors in a plug-in hybrid layout, this next-generation M760 will drop the hybrid system to focus on a refined 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine. This V8 has been updated with a Miller cycle to boost efficiency and meet the stricter Euro 7 emissions rules.
The updated engine is expected to deliver around 544 horsepower, matching the power output of the i7 60 xDrive but slightly trailing the M760e PHEV’s performance. Despite this, BMW engineers promise a strong throttle response and rapid acceleration, even though the car weighs over 2,500 kilograms.
Design and Performance Details Revealed by Spy Shots
Spy images show the new M760 sporting an aggressive body kit linked to the M Sport Pro package. Notable changes include blacked-out trim elements such as the grille frame, mirror caps with M-colored stripes, door handles, window surrounds, and a small rear spoiler. The headlights and taillights have a darkened finish to enhance the sporty look, and the trapezoidal exhausts feature four outlets, though only the outer two appear functional.
No charging ports are visible, confirming this version is a petrol-only model rather than a plug-in hybrid. It will use BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The suspension will reportedly have special tuning aimed at balancing comfort with sportiness, keeping in line with the luxurious nature of the 7 Series.
BMW’s Strategy to Keep Sports Sedans Refined
BMW has chosen to keep the pure petrol V8 alive in the 7 Series but without turning the sedan into a full M model. Unlike smaller BMW M cars, the 7 Series prioritizes luxury and comfort, so the brand avoids harsher M-badged performance in this flagship sedan. Instead, they reserve that level of sportiness for lighter models and increasingly for electric versions, such as the rumored 7 M70 which could push beyond 700 horsepower with electric powertrains.
This decision follows similar approaches by high-end brands like Rolls-Royce, which also avoids extreme sportiness in favour of refined luxury.
