Audi is preparing to reintroduce the A2 as a fully electric hatchback, with the official debut expected this fall. Recently, a prototype was spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany, signaling Audi’s commitment to refining its new compact EV’s performance.
Classic Shape Meets Modern Electric Tech
Despite heavy camouflage, the prototype’s design clearly nods to the original 1999 Audi A2, known for its aerodynamic body and low drag coefficient of 0.28. The new electric A2 appears to preserve this sleek and rounded silhouette, likely including features like a split rear window and an integrated rear spoiler, all aimed at boosting driving efficiency and range.
The fresh A2 will be built on Volkswagen Group’s updated MEB platform, which underpins several of its recent electric models. Power outputs for the A2 are expected to range from about 170 horsepower up to 326 hp, aligning with typical specifications of other MEB-based vehicles. The driving range could top 373 miles, though the exact testing standard has yet to be confirmed.
Modern Interior and Upcoming Availability
Previous spy images have revealed an interior that borrows design elements from Audi’s latest models. A standout feature is a curved dashboard display combining the instrument cluster and infotainment screen into one seamless unit, reflecting Audi’s move towards cleaner, tech-forward cabins.
Audi plans to launch the new A2 in Europe during early 2027, with prices starting at around €35,000. At this stage, there are no plans to bring the model to the US market.
Using the Nürburgring circuit for testing is unusual for a small electric hatchback but highlights Audi’s aim to validate and improve the A2’s handling and performance under demanding conditions. It also signals the brand’s serious approach to developing its next-generation EV offerings.
