Audi’s largest SUV, the Q9, is already on sale globally with a diesel V6 engine, but the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, tailored for the European market, has just been spotted without any camouflage. This fully uncovered prototype suggests the PHEV model is nearing production and could arrive in 2027.
Q9 PHEV Prototype Reveals Key Features
The new Audi Q9 is a big SUV exceeding 5.2 meters in length, positioned to compete with large luxury SUVs like the Mercedes GLS and Range Rover. The diesel variant with a 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine delivering 299 horsepower launched recently, primarily targeting markets such as China, the United States, and the Middle East.
European buyers, however, are more likely to prefer the PHEV version due to growing emissions restrictions and tax penalties on diesel and petrol engines. Recent spy photos show a test vehicle free of camouflage, clearly confirming the PHEV status with visible high-voltage warning stickers on the windshield and rear window, plus a battery charging port on the left rear fender.
Details Point to Entry-Level Hybrid Setup
The prototype also features styling cues linked to the sportier S line trim, like satin-finished aluminium highlights around the front air intakes and along the rear bumper, as well as flat exhaust trim pieces designed to mimic a diffuser. These details distinguish it from the diesel Q9.
This PHEV is reportedly the base hybrid model for the Q9, expected to combine an electric motor with the petrol engine to produce roughly 367 horsepower total. Audi is said to have a more powerful hybrid version planned, which will use a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 paired with electrics for higher output.
Why the PHEV Matters in Europe
The diesel Q9 fits well with markets where diesel remains popular and regulations are less strict. But in Europe, where limitations on internal combustion engines are increasing, the PHEV version is essential to keep the Q9 competitive. It will allow Audi to offer a luxury large SUV with lower emissions and better fuel economy compliance.
The diesel Q9 will start deliveries later this year, built at Audi’s plant in Bratislava, Slovakia. Since the PHEV prototype is already running without camouflage, the plug-in hybrid model could be announced as early as 2027, potentially arriving closer to 2028.
