Apple’s latest iOS 27.2 update has caused the popular CarPlay app APTV to stop working. The app, which allowed users to watch YouTube videos through CarPlay, no longer functions after the update due to disabled system features.
APTV Enabled YouTube Streaming on CarPlay
Though Apple does not officially support YouTube on CarPlay, APTV offered a way to access the video platform by using a browser interface within the app. Users could install APTV from the App Store, browse YouTube, and watch videos through their CarPlay system. The app even gave an option to log into a Google account, adding convenience.
This approach became popular because Apple has not yet released official video app support that includes YouTube. While iOS 26.4 started to allow some video apps on CarPlay, YouTube remained locked out.

Video Playback Controversy and Limitations
APTV’s video playback while driving was controversial. Some users said videos paused once they started moving, aligning with Apple’s safety rules, while others reported continuous playback. Differences might be due to the car’s built-in CarPlay system controlling video based on motion detection.

iOS 27.2 Ends APTV Functionality
With the launch of iOS 27.2, APTV developers confirmed that Apple disabled the core CarPlay video function their app relied on. The developers stated that the change is on Apple’s side and can’t be fixed with an update to APTV itself.
The only suggested workaround is to downgrade the iPhone to an earlier iOS version, which is not practical or recommended for most users.

Why Did Apple Disable This Feature?
The developers hinted that the disabled functionality was related to a streaming video security vulnerability patched in iOS 27.2. This suggests Apple tightened rules to prevent unofficial video apps like APTV from working through CarPlay.
Requests for more information from both Apple and APTV remain unanswered so far.

Video Apps on Android Auto and Future CarPlay Support
Official video app support is expected to improve for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Google announced the Cielo update, bringing video apps to Android Auto later this year or early 2027.
Google’s system will allow video playback only when cars are stationary and switch to audio-only mode while driving.
Apple has yet to release an official YouTube app for CarPlay or a similar system. At present, APTV was among the few options to fill this gap.
More details could emerge as Apple updates iOS and developers respond to these changes.
