BMW X5 M Electric Spied Near Nürburgring with Nearly 1,000 HP

BMW has been spotted testing a prototype of the all-electric X5 M near the Nürburgring, signaling progress on its high-performance EV SUV set to rival models like the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. This version promises around 900 horsepower and advanced features, aiming for a launch around 2027 or 2028.

Prototype Shows Sporty Design and Aerodynamics

The latest spy photos reveal a more aggressive and sporty look compared to the regular electric X5. The front bumper now exposes part of an active aerodynamic system, which uses horizontal flaps to manage airflow, much like the electric BMW M3. This feature helps improve chilling or efficiency based on demand.

Additional distinctive styling includes vents on the sides of the hood, a bulky front bumper, and temporary black alloy wheels. Although the headlights and taillights keep the familiar “X” shape found on the iX5, they still seem to be test units rather than finalized tech. The rear’s lowered central spoiler section replaces where traditional exhaust pipes would be.

High-Tech Cabin and Performance Upgrades

Inside, the X5 M electric will adopt BMW’s latest “Neue Klasse” technology. It will feature a panoramic digital instrument cluster and two large touchscreens: one 17.9-inch screen on the center console and another 14.6-inch screen in front of the passenger. Sport seats with enhanced side support and carbon-fiber interior trim are expected.

The SUV’s chassis is tuned for higher agility. Engineers are refining the adaptive suspension and progressive steering to suit the heavier electric vehicle, which weighs over two tonnes. Braking power will come from six-piston front calipers with ventilated discs and optionally carbon-ceramic brakes.

Powertrain and Launch Timing

BMW plans to offer this X5 M in two powertrain versions: a combustion engine V8 and this fully electric high-performance model. The electric variant will feature four motors—one at each wheel—delivering about 900 horsepower. It will run on a large 141 kWh lithium-ion battery, expected to provide close to 800 km of range.

The electric X5 M is aimed at taking on rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. BMW appears to be targeting a reveal by late 2027 or early 2028, with sales likely starting in summer 2028. Despite still using some temporary parts in this test phase, the prototype points to a fierce competitor in the luxury performance EV SUV segment.
