Alpine Chooses Modern Design Over Retro for Its Next Electric Sports Car

Alpine has confirmed that its upcoming electric 2+2 sports car will not adopt the retro-inspired look of the A310, opting instead for a clean, modern design. The new model will share the Alpine Performance Platform (APP) with the next-generation A110, but it will have a unique appearance that moves away from past styling cues.

Rejecting the A310 Look

Earlier design discussions within Alpine debated whether the new 2+2 should recall the wedge-shaped silhouette of the classic A310 from the 1970s and 1980s. Some designers wanted to bring back that style, inspired by the recent A310 Vision concept showcased at the Paris Motor Show. However, Alpine CEO Philippe Krief has decided against this approach. He explained that while the A110 is widely admired worldwide for its timeless beauty, the A310’s appeal is more niche and mainly limited to French enthusiasts and experts.

As a result, Alpine has chosen to create a “very, very modern” face for the 2+2, abandoning any retro styling. The A310 Vision concept will remain a separate design study and is not currently slated for full production. Krief did not rule out the possibility of a very limited edition model inspired by the A310, similar in spirit to the previous A110 Ultime special edition, which was more about brand heritage than sales.

Using the Alpine Performance Platform

The new 2+2 will be based on the Alpine Performance Platform (APP), which is a modular electric vehicle architecture. This platform supports different body styles and powertrains, making it adaptable for a range of models. The next-generation A110 will be the first sports car built on this hardware, expected to arrive around 2027, although an exact launch date is not confirmed.

Despite sharing the APP platform with the A110, the 2+2 will have its own styling entirely distinct from Alpine’s current models. This fresh design direction signals the brand’s shift towards a modern electric future rather than leaning on past successes for inspiration.

Uncertain Launch Timeline for the 2+2 and A310 Special

Alpine has yet to decide which model will come first after the current A110: the 2+2 or a potential limited-run A310-inspired special. The timing depends on factors such as brand visibility, market demand, and dealer profitability once the A110 is in full production.

Krief emphasized that specialty models like the A310-inspired version are unlikely to be profitable, similar to the A110 Ultime, and are more about maintaining the brand’s legacy than generating significant sales revenue.

Overall, Alpine is focusing on building a future-proof electric sports car lineup with a modern design language while keeping creative options open for limited special editions inspired by its heritage.
