Bugatti Considers Manual Gearbox for Its V16 Tourbillon Hypercar

Bugatti is exploring the idea of pairing its massive V16 engine with a manual transmission, potentially dropping hybrid elements for a purer driving experience. The company’s new Tourbillon model, known for its 16-cylinder engine, might get a lighter, more driver-focused version featuring a traditional three-pedal setup.

Manual Transmission in a V16 Hypercar?

Mate Rimac, the boss of Bugatti’s new parent company, suggested the Tourbillon isn’t just a single model but a base for future variants. One possibility is a version without the hybrid system and automatic gearbox, replaced with a classic manual transmission. He told Top Gear that installing a manual gearbox is something they are definitely open to, which is rare for a hypercar brand known for extreme performance and complex technology.

While Bugatti hasn’t officially confirmed a manual Tourbillon is coming, the enthusiasm hints strongly at the idea being seriously considered. The standard Tourbillon has already sold out before production started, so a more analog, lightweight model could easily attract collectors and enthusiasts willing to pay a premium.

A Pure V16 Engine Without the Hybrid Weight

The current Tourbillon’s 8.3-liter V16 engine produces 986 horsepower naturally aspirated, without electric help, revving up to 9,000 rpm. It makes 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque on its own. Removing the hybrid elements and battery pack would reduce weight, potentially improving the car’s handling and feel.

Such a change might sacrifice extra peak power from the electric motors but would offer a raw engine experience rare in modern hypercars. A pure V16 with a manual gearbox would stand apart in an era dominated by turbocharged engines and automatic transmissions.

Engineering Challenges and Unique Appeal

Building a manual transmission capable of handling nearly 1,000 horsepower and that much torque is a tough engineering challenge. Manual gearboxes are rare at this performance level because automatic systems can shift faster and handle more power reliably.

Still, Bugatti has a history of turning ambitious ideas into reality. If anyone can develop a manual transmission for such a powerful engine, it’s Bugatti under the direction of Rimac. This move would offer a highly engaging, mechanical driving experience that many buyers crave despite market trends favoring automatics.

What This Means for Bugatti’s Future

Although this manual V16 Tourbillon is not confirmed, the idea marks a clear shift in Bugatti’s approach after separating from the Volkswagen Group. The company is looking to create unique, sometimes more traditional models that connect with driving enthusiasts in a way electric or hybrid hypercars may not.

In a market moving toward downsized turbo engines and hybrid powertrains, Bugatti’s choice to stick with a huge naturally aspirated V16—and possibly mate it with a manual gearbox—reinforces its reputation for daring, old-school automotive passion.

More details are expected as Bugatti develops its lineup beyond the current Tourbillon, but for now, the prospect of a manual V16 hypercar is exciting news for fans of high-performance driving.
