Stellantis temporarily stopped Jeep Wrangler production at its Toledo facility following a chemical leak close to the factory. The leak prompted evacuations and shelter-in-place orders, disrupting work and nearby communities.
Chemical Leak Near Plant Causes Production Halt
The incident took place at the MC Tank terminal on Progress Avenue, about 1.5 kilometers from Stellantis’ Toledo assembly plant. This facility stores and handles liquid chemicals, one of which—glycidyl methacrylate—escaped, causing irritation concerns.
As a precaution, the company sent employees at the north plant home early on October 20 and canceled both shifts scheduled for the next day. Since Jeep Wrangler assembly occurs in the north plant, production stopped immediately. Meanwhile, the south plant, where the Jeep Gladiator is built, had already been shut down for the week before the leak.

Emergency Measures and Impact on Surrounding Area
Local fire officials first ordered evacuations for buildings within one mile of the leak site late on October 20. This was followed by a wider shelter-in-place order covering a three-mile radius that required people to remain indoors.
By the next afternoon, authorities reduced restrictions, lifting the broader shelter-in-place order but maintaining evacuation limits within half a mile of the leak. These measures affected local homes, businesses, and essential services.
The Environmental Protection Agency monitored air quality, measuring volatile organic compounds and particulate matter. Containment efforts were ongoing, but officials allowed the chemical reaction inside the tank to continue under strict monitoring.

Union and Community Response
The United Auto Workers (UAW), led by Vice President Kevin Gotinsky, urged that worker safety be prioritized during the emergency. The union encouraged members to reach out to representatives if needed.
Local officials reassured residents that the municipal water supply remained safe and expected municipal services to return to normal on October 22.
The full impact on Jeep Wrangler production will depend on how quickly the leak situation stabilizes and safety orders are lifted.
