BMW M5 Prototype Tested at Nürburgring Ahead of 2027 Update

The new BMW M5 has been spotted again at the Nürburgring, taking part in its final winter testing before the updated model’s expected launch in 2027. The high-performance sedan is undergoing a mild facelift that introduces refined styling and chassis updates, while retaining its powerful plug-in hybrid setup with 727 horsepower.

Updated Design Shows Subtle Changes

The latest spy photos reveal more about the M5’s refreshed look. The front end shows a wider, flatter double kidney grille with the front camera integrated into the left section. The headlights are narrower and sport a twin projector setup, though the lighting system seen inside appears to be a temporary testing unit. The front bumper features four prominent air intakes, hinting at improved cooling or aerodynamics.

The side profile evokes classic BMW styling, particularly recalling the famed E39 M5. This prototype also carries distinctive US-spec features, such as reflectors on the front wheel arches. The model rides on what looks like 21-inch forged alloy wheels paired with striking yellow carbon-ceramic brake calipers, reinforcing its sporty character. The rear stays true to the M5’s identity with quad exhaust tips arranged in pairs and new taillight shapes that share a design cue with the new iX3, including pointed edges extending into the rear fenders.

Interior and Tech Upgrades

Inside, the M5 features the expected panoramic digital instrument cluster and a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen. Passengers can opt for an additional screen on the dashboard, similar to what’s available on the X5. The cabin balances luxury and sportiness with Alcantara-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, carbon-fiber trim accents, and a roof lining covered in Alcantara. Sports seats with extensive electric adjustment complete the driver-focused yet premium environment.

One notable tech addition is the new chassis control system, borrowed from the latest 7 Series, which is expected to replace the current adaptive suspension. This suggests improvements in ride quality and handling precision, tailored to the M5’s performance nature.

Powertrain Remains a 727-HP Plug-In Hybrid

The updated M5 continues with its established plug-in hybrid powertrain. It combines a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with an electric motor, keeping the total output at 727 horsepower. However, the combustion engine has been adapted to meet the stricter Euro 7 emissions standards, resulting in a slight reduction in its individual power, though the overall system output remains the same. The model keeps its all-wheel-drive “M xDrive” system and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Its electric-only driving range is reported to be around 100 kilometers, consistent with the current generation.

Launch Timing and Pricing

Early prototype testing for this M5 update started in early 2025, including cold-weather runs in Sweden. With the current development schedule, the car is expected to make its public debut in spring 2027, followed by market availability in October that year. The existing M5 sells for over €150,000 in Europe, and the facelifted version is anticipated to come with a price increase of several thousand euros reflecting the enhancements.
