Stellantis is working on upgrading its mild hybrid (MHEV) technology by fitting hybrid Peugeot models with a bigger battery. Spy photos reveal prototypes of the new Peugeot 208 Hybrid and 308 Hybrid running on public roads in Europe, showcasing this upcoming change.
More Power from a Bigger Battery
The current 48-volt mild hybrid setup in Peugeot’s ECO models includes a small 21 kW electric motor paired with a 0.43 kWh usable lithium-ion battery. Stellantis appears to be increasing the battery’s capacity to about 0.9 kWh. This higher capacity should enable the electric system to contribute more while driving, helping to lower fuel use and reduce emissions.
Upgrading the battery pack for MHEV systems is a practical way to boost efficiency without moving to full plug-in hybrids. Stellantis plans to deploy this improved technology across various brands, with Peugeot leading the tests.
Seen Testing and Expected Timeline
Spy shots show the prototypes without camouflage in southern Europe, confirming active testing is underway. Stellantis intends to launch these improved hybrid Peugeots with the ECO label by 2027.
This battery upgrade aligns with Stellantis’s broader electrification plan, known as FaSTLAne 2030, which includes new electric models, plug-in hybrids, and enhanced microhybrids. Next year, several other refreshed electrified vehicles from the group, including electric vans and more affordable plug-in hybrids, are also expected.
