Volkswagen is preparing to introduce a hybrid version of its popular Taigo SUV, aiming to secure the ECO badge in Europe. The new Taigo with mild-hybrid technology has been spotted during testing, pointing to a launch planned for 2027.
Mild-Hybrid Tech Gives Taigo an ECO Badge
The Taigo has been a strong seller for Volkswagen, especially in southern Europe where it is manufactured. Since its debut in 2021, the compact SUV coupe has only been available with conventional petrol engines. This leaves a gap in its lineup, as it currently lacks electrified options that meet European emission rules and qualify for the ECO environmental label from Spain’s traffic authority (DGT).
Volkswagen is set to fix this by adding a 48-volt mild-hybrid system paired with a 1.5-litre eTSI petrol engine. This setup is already used across several Group Volkswagen cars, including the Golf and SEAT León. The hybrid’s power output could vary between 116 and 150 horsepower, depending on the exact tune.
Spied Prototype Shows No Camouflage
Recent spy photos capture a prototype of the hybrid Taigo undergoing tests without camouflage, confirming that development is well underway. These images align with Volkswagen Group’s broader plan to electrify models built on the MQB A0 platform, which also includes the related SEAT Ibiza. The electrification push helps these models compete with emerging Chinese rivals and comply with tightening emission standards.
Launch Expected in 2027
The hybrid Taigo is expected to hit European showrooms in 2027. This move will update the model’s technology and help maintain its sales appeal as the SEAT Nivus, a closely related sibling, prepares a new generation.
With this update, the Taigo will finally overcome its main weakness by offering a mild-hybrid powertrain. It also gains the important ECO label, which offers easier access to restricted areas and other benefits for urban drivers in Spain.
