The upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is shaping up to be a standout in the electric performance SUV segment. Recent prototype photos show fewer camouflage layers, offering a clearer view of the vehicle’s side profile and some important aerodynamic details.
More Visible Side Profile and Aerodynamic Features
The prototype’s side window line is fully visible, highlighting a sleek, sloping roofline that tapers toward the rear. Unlike traditional SUVs with boxier rear sections, this model takes a more coupe-like approach, giving it a stretched and dynamic stance. Wide wheel arches with bold cladding accentuate its broad track, especially over the rear wheels.
One notable design feature seen just behind the front wheels is a vertical air outlet below the A-pillars. These vents appear to serve an aerodynamic purpose, improving airflow around the vehicle. The rear end remains heavily camouflaged, but the hatch sits low under the roof, which preserves the wide stance noted in front.
Hints of Production Design and Lighting Details
The front lighting remains covered and protected by makeshift units, but the rear taillights look closer to production form. Their star-shaped LED patterns are clearly visible, suggesting this styling will carry over to the final model. However, details like the rear bumper and diffuser design remain hidden under camouflage.
Advanced Powertrain and AMG.EA Platform
The GT SUV is built on Mercedes-AMG’s new AMG.EA electric platform. It is expected to share much of its technology with the GT 4-Door Coupe, including a powerful triple axial-flux motor system. This setup reportedly delivers up to 1,153 horsepower at peak, with an estimated torque of 1,475 pound-feet (2,000 Newton-meters), making it a serious contender in the electric performance SUV class.
The battery pack is believed to be the same 106 kWh unit used in the GT 4-Door Coupe. It features oil-cooled cylindrical cells and supports ultra-fast charging at up to 600 kW under ideal conditions.
Other high-tech features expected include air suspension with semi-active roll stabilization, active aerodynamic elements called AEROKINETICS to balance downforce and efficiency, and a 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system with variable torque distribution.
Efficiency Improvements and Motor Design
The GT SUV’s front axle is powered by a compact axial-flux motor, complemented by two disc-shaped motors on the rear axle in the flagship version. An automated clutch system can disconnect the front axle when not needed, which helps improve driving efficiency. This setup is similar to the GT 4-Door Coupe, which also uses axial-flux motors known for being lighter and more compact than traditional radial-flux designs.
Official Reveal Set for October 17
Mercedes-AMG plans to reveal the full production-ready GT SUV on October 17. With its striking design and high power output, this electric SUV is set to take on rivals like Ferrari’s Purosangue, aiming to make a bold statement in the luxury performance market.
