Stellantis is testing a new version of the Peugeot 5008 plug-in hybrid with a smaller battery. The goal is to reduce the electric driving range to offer a more affordable PHEV model. This move aims to better compete with rising Chinese rivals, which currently offer hybrids with longer electric ranges.
Smaller Battery and Reduced Range for Lower Costs
The current Peugeot 5008 PHEV uses a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing about 80 km of electric driving under the WLTP standard. The new test prototype spotted on roads in southern Europe comes with a smaller 13 kWh battery. This change will cut the electric-only range to around 45-50 km WLTP.
Using a smaller battery reduces the vehicle’s cost, which could help the 5008 attract buyers who prioritize price. Presently, the 5008 PHEV starts at about €46,000 before incentives, and lowering this base price is crucial given the pressure from more affordable Chinese plug-in hybrids.
Facing Growing Competition from Chinese Brands
Chinese automakers like BYD, Omoda, Jaecoo, and MG have been expanding their PHEV lineups with models offering electric ranges above 100 km, making them attractive to cost-conscious customers. Stellantis wants to stay competitive in this market without compromising the volume of sales.
Rather than matching rivals’ high electric ranges, Stellantis’ strategy appears to focus on making PHEVs more accessible by accepting shorter electric ranges in exchange for lower prices. This approach might attract buyers who use electric range mainly for daily short trips.
Future Rollout and Impact
Peugeot plans to expand this new plug-in hybrid setup across its passenger car lineup starting in 2027. It is not limited to the 5008, indicating a broader shift in Stellantis’ PHEV strategy. This small-battery variant could help Stellantis push more PHEVs in European markets where affordability plays a big role.
While less electric range means more reliance on the petrol engine on longer trips, this trade-off might suit many customers’ real-world needs. More details about powertrain specs and pricing are expected closer to the official launch.
