Xiaomi has introduced the first beta version of its new operating system, HyperOS 4, in China. This update focuses on smoother performance, a revamped user interface, and more advanced AI integration across devices.
Performance Enhancements Highlighted
HyperOS 4 promises better efficiency in how the system handles tasks. Xiaomi reports that the total number of instructions processed is reduced by 14.4%, allowing the OS to do the same work with fewer resources. After 8 hours of use, the available RAM reportedly increases by 27.2%, thanks to smarter memory preloading. This means the system gets better at predicting app needs over time.
The OS also improves core apps such as the Home Screen, Gallery, and Weather, making them run more efficiently. Xiaomi’s lab tests show opening 30 apps in a row is 17.5% faster after 9 hours of use, while lag occurrences drop by 28.9%. Battery life sees a slight gain of about 15 minutes in a daily usage test. Additionally, scrolling through extensive photo galleries is reported to be up to 90% quicker.
These benchmarks compare HyperOS 4 directly with the previous version, HyperOS 3, under Xiaomi’s testing conditions. Actual results may vary based on devices and usage.
Interface and Ecosystem Updates
The new “Soft Light Glass” design brings a translucent, layered look similar to liquid glass effects seen in some modern UIs. The lock screen now groups notifications more clearly and allows easier adjustments from a single point. Users can stack widgets on the home screen and arrange folders with drag-and-drop.
Xiaomi also refreshed the device management center, which now supports phones, tablets, watches, PCs, and smart home devices from a single screen. It offers quick access to frequently used devices and lets users switch between multiple home profiles with one tap.
Artificial intelligence plays a bigger role, particularly through system apps:
- Voice Recorder now includes smart summaries and auto-skips silent parts.
- Super XiaoAi Input offers structured voice typing and translation.
- AI Voice Notes supports adding images and extracting tasks and insights from notes.
Many of these AI features depend on Xiaomi’s XiaoAi platform, mainly available in China, so they may not appear or function the same on global versions.
Advanced AI Interaction and Super XiaoAi 2.0
HyperOS 4 introduces Super XiaoAi 2.0 with an “Expert Mode” and integrates Xiaomi’s MiMo large language model. New AI interaction tools include:
- An “Inspiration Ball” that offers content-related suggestions you can drag and interact with.
- A “Status Island” feature similar to the Dynamic Island on other devices, keeping task status visible even when switching apps.
- A “Code & Number Island” that activates with a three-finger swipe, providing quick access to scanning or acting on QR codes, flight info, and other data.
Promised AI capabilities cover cross-app task planning, controlling multiple Xiaomi devices via voice, scheduled automations, advanced document creation, and PC/Mac support for XiaoAi. Privacy protections include device-cloud privacy computing, second-step approval for sensitive actions, app-specific permissions, and memory management.
Some AI features will arrive later through over-the-air updates, with staged rollout planned from late August and mid-September for the beta users in China. Xiaomi notes the schedule might change due to technical requirements.
Beta Access and Availability
The first wave of HyperOS 4 beta testers can apply through the Xiaomi Community’s Internal Testing Center in China. The versions currently open for application include OS4.0.0.11.XPAEUXM and OS4.0.0.12.XPCEUXM, both for the Chinese ROM.
At this stage, the beta is limited to the China market and mainly targeted at users comfortable with early software testing. Global release details and timeline remain to be announced.
