BMW is finalizing testing on the new 3 Series, with the sporty M350 xDrive variant leading the charge. This new model stands out by offering 443 horsepower from its 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. A standout feature is its “Drift Moment” mode, which temporarily turns the all-wheel-drive system into a rear-wheel-drive setup for spirited driving.
M350 xDrive Brings Power and Drift Capability
The M350 xDrive replaces the current M340i and boosts output to 443 PS (about 437 horsepower) and 580 Nm of torque, thanks to a turbocharged engine assisted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The car uses an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and features standard BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. It can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds.
The suspension has been upgraded with adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, and variable sport steering. Optionally, buyers can choose wider 20-inch sports tires—245/35 at the front and 275/30 at the rear—usually reserved for full M models.
New Drift Mode Offers Rear-Wheel-Drive Fun on Demand
The highlight is the Drift Moment mode, which directs all power to the rear axle when activated via the central touchscreen. This setting turns off stability controls and manages the multi-plate clutch like BMW’s M performance models, enabling controlled drifts.
However, this feature won’t be ready at launch but will arrive through a remote software update during 2027. Even cars already sold will receive this update, indicating BMW’s strategy to keep customers engaged post-sale.
Shared Design and Tech with Electric i3
The new 3 Series follows BMW’s “Neue Klasse” design language, similar to the recently launched electric i3. Though still wearing camouflage, the M350 shows modern headlights and taillights following the brand’s futuristic style. The interior is expected to share the panoramic digital instrument cluster and a large 17.9-inch touchscreen found in electric models.
BMW recently wrapped up final dynamic tests at its Miramas circuit in France, a typical step before unveiling the production version. The official launch is likely early 2027, possibly in March, though exact details and pricing remain under wraps.
