Tesla has reached a major milestone by producing its 10 millionth electric vehicle. This latest car, a Model Y from the Fremont factory in California, marks a dramatic increase in the company’s output over recent years.
Rapid Increase in Production
The 10 millionth Tesla was completed in late July at Fremont. Interestingly, this same plant started producing Tesla’s first car, the Model S, back in June 2012. Since then, Fremont has remained central to Tesla’s manufacturing, alongside its newer plants in Shanghai, Berlin, and Texas.
Tesla highlighted the speed of its growth: it took 14 years to reach the first million vehicles, but only six years to add the last nine million. The one-millionth Tesla was also a Model Y, finished at Fremont in March 2020. In December 2025, Tesla made its ninth millionth vehicle in Shanghai, and now, less than a year later, the tenth millionth vehicle has been built back in California.
End of an Era and New Projects at Fremont
The Fremont plant is transitioning as Tesla phases out the Model S and Model X, which were produced for more than a decade. This change is making way for new projects, including preparing the factory to mass-produce Tesla’s humanoid robots called Optimus, which represent the company’s move into robotics.
The Model Y that marked this milestone belongs to the “Juniper” generation. This updated version was introduced at the beginning of 2025 and is Tesla’s top-selling model by far.
Tesla Leads Pure EV Production
With 10 million vehicles built, Tesla is believed to be the first company focused solely on electric cars to reach this volume. BYD, which includes both pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, had passed 10 million units a year earlier, in 2024.
The milestone comes as Tesla regains strength in Europe thanks to standard versions of the Model 3 and Model Y, which have attracted more buyers. Meanwhile, production of the Cybertruck has started in Texas, waiting only on regulatory approval for its advanced autonomous driving capabilities.
