For the 2027 model year, Ram will gradually remove the eTorque mild-hybrid system from its 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine on the Ram 1500. The change marks a return to a traditional V8 setup without the hybrid features, starting partway through the year.
What the Phase-Out Means for the 5.7-Liter HEMI
The eTorque system uses a belt-driven motor-generator and a 48-volt battery to support smoother engine restarts and provide brief electrical assistance during acceleration. Its removal will simplify the engine, eliminating these components and the associated automatic stop-start function. However, Ram will keep key technologies like variable valve timing and the Multi-Displacement System (MDS), which shuts down four cylinders during light loads to save fuel.
Despite the transition, the 5.7-liter HEMI is expected to keep its current output of 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The overall driving experience will be more traditional without the hybrid support, with the engine continuing to run at stops rather than shutting off.
Why Ram Is Making This Change Now
Ram initially removed the V8 during the 2025 refresh of the 1500, replacing it with the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six. Strong customer demand brought the V8 back for 2026, equipped with the eTorque system to integrate with the truck’s updated Atlantis electrical architecture—a project referred to as Project F-15.
Using the existing eTorque setup allowed Ram to bring the V8 back more quickly due to prior experience with this system’s calibration and emissions compliance. Early in 2027, a non-hybrid version of the V8 appeared in the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee, proving the engine could function without the mild-hybrid hardware in the latest models. The non-hybrid engine will now become available more widely across the Ram 1500 range.
Other Engine Options and Ram’s Performance Lineup
The 2027 Ram 1500 will also continue offering a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and two 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six options. High-performance models like the Rumble Bee SRT and the Ram 1500 TRX SRT keep their supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI, delivering up to 777 horsepower.
What We Still Don’t Know
Ram has not published detailed pricing or fuel economy figures for the non-hybrid 5.7-liter HEMI. The removal of eTorque might slightly impact fuel efficiency because the electrical assistance and automatic stop-start system are no longer in use. It remains unclear how this change will affect the truck’s overall running costs or appeal to different buyer groups.
