Volkswagen Launches First Electric Jetta Model Exclusively in China

Volkswagen is reviving its Jetta nameplate in China with a new fully electric sedan. This move marks the brand’s first electric model under the Jetta line, developed in partnership with local automaker FAW. The launch reflects Volkswagen’s renewed effort to compete in China’s quickly growing electric vehicle market.

Jetta M6: An Affordable Electric Sedan for China

The new Jetta M6 is a four-door sedan measuring 4.80 metres long, 1.86 metres wide, and 1.50 metres tall, with a wheelbase of 2.82 metres. Its design is fairly conservative, with sharp headlights, connected taillights, and 18-inch wheels. Although the interior details have not been released, the exterior suggests a sleek and modern profile.

Volkswagen plans to offer the Jetta M6 in two electric versions. The lower-power version produces 113 kW (152 hp) and weighs 1,557 kg. The stronger variant makes 145 kW (194 hp) and weighs 1,628 kg. Battery capacity and driving range have not been confirmed yet, but the weight suggests that the car does not use a very large battery pack.

A Competitive Price for China’s EV Market

The Jetta M6’s starting price is about 102,000 yuan, roughly €13,180. This places it among the most affordable electric sedans in China. Volkswagen is targeting a segment that has seen strong growth and offers rivals like the Tesla Model 3, Mona M03, and MG 07.

Volkswagen created the Jetta brand in China in 2019 through its partnership with FAW. Initially focused on petrol cars aimed at younger buyers, Jetta gained early success but sales have slowed recently. With China’s fast shift to electrification and growing local competition, Volkswagen is now pushing the Jetta name into electric vehicles to keep its market presence strong.

Outlook for Jetta in China and Beyond

Volkswagen remains the leading foreign carmaker in China, planning five new electric and plug-in hybrid models through its FAW joint venture. Currently, Jetta cars only sell in China, and there are no confirmed plans to bring the all-electric Jetta M6 to Europe or other regions.

This launch shows Volkswagen’s attempt to adapt a familiar nameplate for the evolving tastes of Chinese consumers, who increasingly prefer electric technology over traditional combustion engines. How well the Jetta M6 will perform remains to be seen as competition intensifies.
