Alfa Romeo has postponed the arrival of the new Stelvio to around 2028, shifting away from an all-electric approach to offer both hybrid and electric versions. Ahead of the Stelvio’s update, the brand will launch a new compact SUV in late 2027, aiming to fill a gap in its lineup.
Stelvio’s Redesign Pushed Back, Hybrid Power Returns
The next-generation Stelvio was initially expected in 2026 but now won’t appear until about 2028. Alfa Romeo has revised its strategy, moving away from launching the redesigned Stelvio strictly as a battery-electric vehicle. Instead, the vehicle will be available with hybrid and full-electric powertrains from launch.
This change reflects the current challenges of charging infrastructure, offering buyers more flexible options. The new Stelvio will be built on Stellantis’s STLA Large platform and is expected to grow in size, likely exceeding 4.9 metres (nearly five yards) in length. This would make it larger than rivals like the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC. There are also reports of a high-performance Quadrifoglio version that could surpass 1,000 horsepower.
Meanwhile, the existing Stelvio and Giulia will remain on sale with minor updates until about 2027, giving current owners time before the new model arrives.
New Compact SUV Arrives Ahead of Stelvio Update
Alfa Romeo’s most immediate product focus is a new compact SUV set to launch by the end of 2027. This model, built on the STLA Medium platform at the Melfi plant in Italy, will sit between the mid-size Tonale and the larger Stelvio in the brand’s lineup.
The new crossover is expected to introduce a fresh design language that the upcoming Stelvio will later adopt. It aims to bridge the gap in Alfa Romeo’s offerings and attract buyers interested in a smaller premium SUV with Italian styling.
For now, buyers seeking an Alfa Romeo SUV will need to choose between the current Stelvio or wait a few years for the new models.
