2028 Nissan Primastar Spied With Updated Interior and Facelift

The Nissan Primastar, a close relative of the Renault Trafic, is preparing for a mid-cycle update. Spy photos reveal the 2028 Primastar prototype in testing, showing a refreshed cabin and some exterior changes mainly focused on the front end.

Interior Updates Reveal New Touchscreen

During recent road testing in southern Europe, the 2028 Primastar prototype was spotted with light camouflage. Thanks to a rare glimpse inside, the new interior layout has been partially revealed. It appears Nissan’s updated van will feature a larger touchscreen for higher trim levels. Currently, both the Primastar and Trafic models come with an 8-inch display, so this upgrade points to a more modern infotainment setup.

The cabin also suggests improvements in driver assistance technology, likely to meet upcoming European safety standards. The interior changes on the Primastar will closely mirror upgrades expected inside the Renault Trafic diesel version, since both vans share much of their design and mechanical underpinnings.

Exterior and Powertrain Details

The spy photos show the Primastar wearing camouflage concentrated on the front bumper and grille, indicating that the facelift primarily touches up these areas. Meanwhile, the rear is uncovered and displays Nissan’s new badging and typography, signaling subtle brand updates that distinguish it from the Renault sibling.

Under the hood, Nissan will continue using diesel powertrains for the Primastar. The main engine is expected to be a 2.0-litre four-cylinder dCi unit, offered in at least two outputs: around 110 hp and 150 hp. These engines should be refined to lower emissions rather than completely replaced.

While the prototype seen featured the commercial van body, the range will likely continue offering the Combi passenger version, following current model configurations.

Launch Timeline Aligned With Renault Trafic

Development of the updated Primastar is running alongside Renault’s Trafic facelift program. Renault plans to unveil the refreshed Trafic, including an all-electric model, in the second half of 2027. Nissan’s launch for the new Primastar is expected around the same time, but official dates have not been confirmed yet.

This mid-life update will allow Nissan and Renault to keep their vans competitive with improved technology and cleaner diesel engines, while expanding the electric Trafic lineup separately.
