2028 BMW M5 Facelift Shows Key Production Details in Latest Spy Photos

BMW continues advancing the facelifted version of its high-performance M5 sedan. Recent spy images taken near the Nürburgring test center reveal significant updates, giving a clearer look at the production-ready design. The refreshed M5 will keep its powerful plug-in hybrid setup with 727 hp, despite stricter emissions rules.

More Visible Front-End and Lighting Changes

The new photos show the M5’s updated front end with less camouflage, allowing the bright red paint to peek through. The production headlights have become more defined, featuring two thin horizontal LED daytime running light strips. This contrasts with the diagonal style found on the new 3 Series, helping set the M5 apart even while following the brand’s Neue Klasse design language.

The main LED headlight units sit below these strips. The familiar double oval grille remains covered but hints at sharper lines underneath. The front bumper and air intakes appear similar to the current model, but large cooling radiators for the hybrid powertrain are clearly visible behind them. The redesigned hood and fenders add to the aggressive stance.

Subtle Profile and Rear Refresh

The side view shows hardly any change in body shape, though the facelift will extend slightly in length due to new bumpers. A newly revealed front lip spoiler aims to improve front-end downforce, a detail not easily spotted before due to heavy camouflage. This addition suggests BMW is focusing on handling balance in this updated M5.

At the rear, changes are modest. The taillights adopt a new graphic in line with the latest 3 Series design and gain a subtle tint. BMW keeps the signature quad exhaust tips, a hallmark of the M5 since 1999.

Interior Updates and Testing Progress

Inside, the facelift is expected to be more noticeable. Spy information points to a panoramic digital instrument cluster stretching across the base of the windshield. A large 17.9-inch touchscreen, appearing to float above the dashboard, is also planned—the same unit found in the iX3 electric SUV. A 14-inch touchscreen for the passenger will be offered as an option, and a new steering wheel design is anticipated.

BMW is intensifying tests around Nürburgring to fine-tune the chassis control system and overall comfort. Winter testing will finalize these adjustments. The goal is to ensure the plug-in hybrid system, including the turbocharged V8 engine, performs reliably under Euro 7 emissions limits.

Powertrain and Availability

Due to Euro 7 rules, BMW had to slightly reduce the output of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Still, the combined system maintains a strong 727 hp. The current electric range is 62 kilometers, but reports suggest BMW aims to improve this figure in the facelifted M5.

The prototype’s progress and the visibility of production details suggest BMW is on track for a spring 2027 global reveal. The updated M5 should arrive at dealerships worldwide by late 2027 as a 2028 model.
