Sharper Look at the Third-Generation Design
Recently caught during drag tests in southern Europe, the latest KONA prototype shows off less disguise than previous test mules. This clearer view hints at a design inspired by Hyundai’s Crater Concept, confirmed by recent leaks. Though the interior remains unseen, it is expected to include Hyundai’s new Pleos technology, a significant tech step up shared across upcoming models.
New Hybrid Engines to Rival Chinese Competitors
Under the hood, Hyundai is updating the KONA’s powertrain to match competitor advances. The refreshed model will offer a gasoline engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system (MHEV). The existing self-charging hybrid (HEV) version will continue but receive an update using the latest hybrid setup debuting in the Kia Seltos. This powertrain is expected to deliver up to 180 hp and be available with front-wheel and all-wheel drive options.
For buyers focused on zero-emission driving, the KONA will keep its fully electric version, maintaining its status as one of Hyundai’s popular EVs.
Launch Timeline
Internally known as the SX3, the new KONA is set to make its official debut by the end of 2024. However, European customers will likely have to wait until the first half of 2027 to find it in dealerships.
