Xiaomi has revealed that its new SKYNOMAD series vehicles have passed crash tests conducted at speeds well above common safety benchmarks. The company’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, shared a video demonstrating these rigorous tests, emphasizing Xiaomi’s focus on delivering strong safety performance as it expands into the automotive sector.
Crash Tests Exceed Established Safety Speeds
The SKYNOMAD models underwent several types of collision tests, each carried out at higher speeds than typical industry standards:
- Frontal collision: Tested at 64 km/h, surpassing the 56 km/h C-NCAP benchmark.
- Frontal 25% offset collision: Completed at 72 km/h, above the 64 km/h requirement from the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index (C-IASI).
- Side collision: Conducted at 70 km/h versus the 60 km/h C-NCAP standard.
- Rear collision: Tested at 92 km/h, significantly higher than the national standard of 50 km/h.
These tests cover a wide range of crash scenarios and indicate Xiaomi is aiming to ensure robust protection in real-world impacts.
SKYNOMAD Series Introduced with Safety as a Highlight
The emphasis on enhanced crash safety comes shortly after Xiaomi’s official launch of the SKYNOMAD series on July 30. The lineup includes two large SUVs:
- The N90 Max, a seven-seat flagship model with range-extended technology.
- The N70 Max, a five-seat, four-wheel-drive range-extended SUV.
Both vehicles are now open for pre-order. Xiaomi’s approach suggests it wants to build confidence by demonstrating that its new cars meet and exceed existing Chinese safety standards before deliveries begin.
