Stellantis Reveals Affordable Electric Citroën 2CV to Boost European Market Comeback

At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Stellantis unveiled a key part of its strategy to regain ground in Europe’s declining EV market: an all-electric version of the iconic Citroën 2CV. Slated for production in Europe around 2028, this affordable small EV aims to start at roughly €15,000 (about $16,800), targeting budget-conscious buyers and reviving interest in low-cost electric vehicles.

Affordable EVs Targeted for Market Recovery

Stellantis has faced shrinking market share and weaker profits in Europe over recent years. The new Citroën 2CV’s low price is part of a broader plan to bring more accessible electric options to European customers, who currently see fewer inexpensive EV choices. This move may help Stellantis reconnect with buyers who have drifted toward other brands or mobility alternatives.

However, the company’s turnaround plan still faces skepticism. Following disappointing share performance — with prices dropping to their lowest point since Stellantis formed in 2021 — investors and analysts remain cautious. Bernstein recently downgraded Stellantis shares to “underperform,” noting that recent sales increases partly stemmed from dealers replenishing stock rather than genuine higher demand.

Distinct Brand Identities and New Concepts Emphasized

During the event, Stellantis chief Antonio Filosa highlighted six of nine new concepts, including the retro-inspired 2CV. Design head Gilles Vidal also emphasized the importance of stronger brand identities as Stellantis navigates the challenge of shared platforms, which can make cars from different brands look similar.

Alongside the 2CV, Paris hosted international premieres for models like the DS 7, Fiat Grizzly, and Lancia Gamma, plus new versions of the Opel Corsa GSE and Chinese brand Leapmotor’s B03 and D19 models. Leapmotor plays a vital role in Stellantis’s plans through 2030, helping expand the range and reduce costs thanks to the partnership with the Chinese EV maker.

Experts Highlight Challenges for Citroën 2CV

Industry analysts see the 2CV as a pivotal project. Pedro Pacheco of Gartner called it Stellantis’s most intriguing new model, but cautioned that success depends on balancing cost with quality, safety, and performance. Meanwhile, Felipe Munoz from Car Industry Analysis pointed to intensifying competition from Chinese EV brands expanding aggressively in Europe, which may pressure Stellantis to improve its price and product competitiveness.

The Citroën 2CV EV represents a significant test of Stellantis’s ability to revive its European business by winning over customers at the affordable end of the market with electric models. More details and pricing are expected closer to its 2028 launch.
