Renault Considers Limited-Run 8 Gordini Electric Coupé Following R5 Turbo 3E

Renault is exploring the idea of building a limited-edition electric sports car inspired by the classic 8 Gordini model. This move would follow the upcoming production of the all-electric R5 Turbo 3E hyper hatch, set to arrive in 2028.

Possible Successor to R5 Turbo 3E on Alpine Platform

The R5 Turbo 3E, announced with a production run limited to 1,980 units and starting at approximately £135,000, is based on the Alpine Performance Platform (APP). It features innovative in-wheel electric motors that deliver a combined output of 533bhp.

Renault’s CEO Fabrice Cambolive has hinted that after focusing on launching and delivering the R5 Turbo 3E, the company may turn towards creating a small series of sporty electric cars. The 8 Gordini is seen as a strong candidate for this next step, tapping into Renault’s rich performance legacy.

8 Gordini Concept Highlights Heritage and Electric Potential

The new 8 Gordini concept, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, reimagines the 1962 saloon as a compact two-door coupé with modern electric power. While the original Renault 8 had a rear engine and four seats, the concept is shorter than the Clio and seats two.

With a claimed 270bhp electric motor, the concept sports styling cues from the classic Gordini racing cars. This includes round headlights alongside lower spotlights, a blue and white racing livery, and subtle striping. It also introduces technology like rear lights integrated into the bodywork, which vanish when turned off—a feature Renault is exploring for production models.

Design Focus Balances Sportiness and Approachability

Renault’s design chief Alexandre Malval and concept head Roman Gauvin emphasized keeping the 8 Gordini true to its honest, approachable roots. The concept aims for a fun driving experience rather than extreme performance targets.

The interior reflects a motorsport influence with bucket seats, an aluminum dashboard with digital circular dials, toggle switches, and a rally-style footplate. Gauvin mentioned that while some styling and technology elements could appear in future Renault cars, the concept itself is currently just a tribute rather than a production preview.

Future Electric Sports Models Could Draw From Gordini Legacy

Though Renault does not have official plans to produce a new 8 Gordini model yet, the company is open to developing small, electric, sporty cars grounded in its heritage. The 8 Gordini concept pays homage to this legacy while highlighting Renault’s capability for electric fun-to-drive cars.

For now, the 8 Gordini is intended as a one-off exhibition piece for Renault’s new museum in Flins, France, the original site of the 8’s manufacture. Public reaction could influence future decisions, but any electrified Gordini successor would come after the limited release of the R5 Turbo 3E.
